The free-of-charge Portuguese Stone Application was conceived in the context of the Primeira Pedra programme as a unique database that provides information about the wide variety of Portuguese Stone from the national territory and its individual characteristics. This platform also provides a vast list of companies that extract, transform and export stone in Portugal, with a network of substantial information about their industrial practice.
Designed to facilitate navigation and improve access to information about Portuguese Stone and its industry, this database includes all types of stone found in Portuguese territory. Introducing the stones by categories - Marble, Granite, Limestone, Schist and Slate - the platform breaks down all the individual information by origins and occurrences, common uses and available reserves, also presenting detailed descriptions about the material and chemical properties of each stone. This database is synchronised with a list of national stone industry companies, including their respective addresses and contacts.
With a prominent research-based component, this application also serves as a form of liaison between companies and clients, strengthening a network of contacts and establishing a knowledge archive.
First Stone was an experimental international research programme that explored the potential of Portuguese Stone. Centred on the unique physical and visual characteristics of the various types of stone found across Portugal’s landscape, First Stone intersected production and design through the development of innovative applications for this exceptional material, highlighting its quality as well as the vast industry that is connected to its extraction and transformation.
Promoted by Assimagra and conceived by experimentadesign, the First Stone Programme was co-financed by FEDER under COMPETE2020.
